We would like to welcome and introduce our newest artists in residence here at 30 Upstairs – Lauren Redican and Annsuli Marais. The pair, who started working together while completing their Fine Arts degrees at Massey University in 2011, will be joining us for a 3 month residency and will also show at the gallery in January 2014.
Their collaborative practice investigates themes of communication, identity and visual thinking, while experimenting with different media, including drawing, text, painting, collage, print and sculpture.
Redican and Marais have recently exhibited two billboard works in the Wellington CBD: Don’t Miss Out – Public Billboard, Bartley + Company Gallery and Concentrate – Public Billboard, Cuba Street/Swan Lane intersection. They also exhibited at the City Gallery, Wellington and Enjoy Public Art Gallery, Wellington.
During their residency the pair will work on their project Short term accommodation, which aims to obliquely address ‘housing’ problems. Paying special attention to the site of Courtenay Place they will use the studio to create a body of work with vinyl, plastic prints, framed works, and floor sculptures.
We look forward to working with them and seeing their work evolve over the next few months.
